What Is Positive Input Ventilation and Why Do Manchester Homes Need It?

Positive Input Ventilation (PIV) is a whole-house ventilation strategy that works by gently but continuously pushing filtered, tempered air into a property. Unlike extract-only ventilation, which simply removes air from a single room, a PIV system creates a positive pressure throughout the entire building. This positive pressure forces stale, moisture-laden air out through normal gaps and leakage points, replacing it with fresh, drier air from outside or from the loft space.

The science is straightforward. Condensation forms when warm, moisture-saturated air comes into contact with a cold surface and the air can no longer hold its moisture in vapour form. In a poorly ventilated home, indoor relative humidity can routinely exceed 70-80%. At these levels, every cold wall, window frame and corner is a potential site for condensation and subsequent mould growth.

A PIV system running continuously reduces indoor relative humidity to levels where condensation cannot form. The airflow rate is low enough to be completely unnoticeable in daily life, yet consistent enough to maintain conditions unfavourable for mould throughout the year, including the high-risk winter months when heating cycles create extreme humidity spikes from cooking, bathing and breathing.

For Greater Manchester homes specifically, where older solid-walled terraced housing makes up a large proportion of the housing stock, PIV is often the most effective and cost-efficient solution available. The alternative, mechanical extract ventilation in every room, is considerably more disruptive and expensive to install correctly.

How a PIV System Works in a Typical Manchester Home

Fresh air is drawn from the loft, filtered, and pushed gently into your home through a single ceiling diffuser. This creates positive pressure that displaces stale, damp air out through gaps around windows and doors.

Installation typically takes two to three hours. Here is what happens on the day.

1

Survey and Specification

We assess the property size, type, existing ventilation and the nature of the damp or mould problem. We check loft access and measure available head height to determine the correct unit and duct configuration.

2

Unit Installation in Loft

The PIV unit is mounted on a platform or bracket in the loft, clear of insulation. Loft units draw air from the roof space, which is naturally drier and slightly warmer than outdoor air, making it ideal for conditioning before supply.

3

Duct to Hallway Diffuser

A short insulated duct runs from the unit through the ceiling to a hallway diffuser, typically centrally located to distribute fresh air evenly. The diffuser sits flush with the ceiling and is almost invisible once fitted.

4

Electrical Connection

The unit is wired to a suitable supply circuit. Most units draw between 5W and 25W, comparable to a small LED light fitting. No major electrical works are required in a standard installation.

5

Commissioning and Set-Up

The unit is set to the appropriate flow rate for the property. Summer boost and winter settings are configured. We explain the system and leave contact details in case of any queries.

6

Follow-Up Check

We follow up to confirm humidity levels have reduced and that mould has not returned. In most cases customers report a noticeable improvement in condensation within the first two to four weeks.

When a PIV System Is the Right Solution

A PIV system is not a universal solution for all damp problems. Here is a straightforward guide to when it is and is not appropriate.

Loft roof space with insulation — ready for PIV installation

PIV Is Ideal When:

  • Mould appears on multiple walls or ceilings
  • Condensation forms on windows most mornings
  • The property feels stuffy or humid even when heated
  • The house is a Victorian or Edwardian terrace with limited ventilation
  • Extractor fans have been fitted but mould persists
  • Loft insulation has been upgraded, reducing natural air flow
  • Tenants or residents have respiratory sensitivities to mould spores

PIV Is Not the Right Solution When:

  • The damp is rising from the ground (rising damp) rather than condensation
  • Water is penetrating through the roof or walls (penetrating damp)
  • There is a structural defect allowing water ingress
  • The property has no suitable loft access and compact units are impractical

In these cases we will identify the actual cause and recommend the correct solution, which may be a damp proof course injection, repointing or structural repair.

PIV System FAQs

How long does a PIV system installation take?
A standard loft-based PIV installation typically takes three to five hours. We access the loft, mount the unit, route the supply duct to the hallway diffuser and connect the power supply. In most cases the property can be used normally throughout.
What is the difference between a loft PIV and a through-wall PIV?
A loft PIV unit sits in the roof space and draws air from the loft environment, which is slightly warmer and drier than outside air. It distributes through a hallway diffuser, serving the whole property. A through-wall or compact PIV is mounted on an internal or external wall and draws air directly from outside. It is used in flats, maisonettes or properties with no suitable loft access.
Will the PIV system make my home feel cold?
No. Loft PIV units draw air from the roof space, which stays warmer than outdoor temperature year-round due to the insulating effect of the loft itself. The airflow rate is low enough that you will not feel a draught. Many units include a gentle heating element for use in very cold weather.
Is a PIV system suitable for a rented property?
Yes. PIV systems are widely used in the private rented sector as a cost-effective solution for condensation and mould. We provide landlords and letting agents with written installation reports and photographic evidence. The systems are tenant-friendly, requiring no user interaction to function correctly.
How often does a PIV system need servicing?
The main maintenance requirement is a filter replacement every five years, though in dusty lofts this may be needed more frequently. The filter replacement takes around 30 minutes and parts are inexpensive. The units themselves are designed to run continuously for decades with minimal maintenance beyond filter changes.
Which PIV brands do you install in Manchester?
We primarily install Nuaire Drimaster units and Vent-Axia PIV systems, with Envirovent units available for multi-property contracts. All manufacturers offer a 7-year warranty. We recommend the most appropriate model for your property type, size and the nature of the condensation problem.
